The Hermitage

The Hermitage is an 18th-century estate in New Jersey near Saddle River that was once owned by William Livingston, the first governor of the state. The property has been restored and is now open to the public for tours. Highlights of the estate include the Georgian mansion, the gardens, and the slave quarters. Visitors can also see the remains of the original Dutch settlement on the property. The Hermitage is open for tours from April through October.

For a closer look, plan your visit around the holidays. The Hermitage is open every day except Thanksgiving and Christmas. There are limited hours the day before Thanksgiving and on Christmas Eve. Visitors can take pictures on the grounds but cannot take photos inside the mansion. Strollers and bags are not permitted in the mansion. The Hermitage is close to bus stops 34 and 56. Make sure you check the schedule before planning your visit.
